Site Speed Issues

I seem to be having a few issues with the speed of my site - how can I rectify this? I guess I'm looking for image compression tools but does anyone else have any ideas on what is causing the "lag"? The left hand menu seems to spread all over the page whilst loading before snapping back into place.

How about temporarily de-activating the Social Network blocks on the left hand side and check again, these have caused me problems in the past.
