Use Non Alpha Numeric in SKU

Is there a work around to use non alpha numeric characters in the SKU on a product listing. Ideally we would like to use "/" and "." in the SKUs as these are used in our sage codes.

It is possible to use these characters in the SKUs of variations just not in the SKU of the master item listing. We currently workround by using the barcode as our SKU which allows these characters , would just be tidier if we could use the proper field.

I doubt it because these are url components. If you don't specify a url bp then uses your sku. The barcode field is just a text field.
