Random spike in page views

So on Sunday we had a random spike in the page view stats: We generally get 2-3000 page views a day, on Saturday we had over 30000. Looking at the Most Viewed Pages tab in the back office, 24000 of these were for one particular product. It's not a special product, not new, just random product.

Any suggestions what might be happening?

Have a look at users online now in the Site Statistics and change the dropdown to Others Users : Saturday. Also have a look in Top Referring Domains.

The may help you track down the culprit.

Thanks Dave, thought there'd be some data like that available somewhere. It seems someone in the Netherlands was very keen yesterday...

Might be worth sending BP support an e-mail to see if any other BP sites have been hit and for their thoughts. I did a quick search on the IP address and it seems that IP is responsible for carrying out spam and brute force attacks on websites. It is also listed on a couple of IP blacklists.

I'm sure your site is well protected but like I say it can't hurt letting BP know.

I've added them to our sites blacklist and dropped BP an email about it.
