How to get a featured product to show at the top of a category?

Hello,

I want to get a specific product to show at the top of a category page, but without using custom sort (I need them sorted in a different order specifically).

I have gone to the category page and on the product tab I have clicked the "featured product" box for the specific product.

I have gone to the category page layout that is linked to the category, and on the "main blocks" tab it has "featured products" enabled and shown above "page content".

But this doesn't seem to do anything, unless I click "Always display", which then does display the featured product at the top of the page. But that's not really ideal as it appears above all of the page content, including the "Page content (above list)" text which introduces the category.

So I end up with:

Featured Products
[PRODUCT]

Breadcrumb > Trail
CATEGORY HEADING
Category text
[PRODUCTS]

Which looks weird, and also the featured product block is so big it takes up the whole screen, so the customer would have to scroll down to even see what the page they are on actually is (a list of products).

Is there a way to just push a featured product to the top of the list in the category section? All I want to do is have a page for a related range of products, with the main product first, and then all the accessories/expansion listed after (without a custom list).

Is there any way to do that?

The way I do this is to use the selected products block, then get it properly coded up css wise to make it a proper feature, not just a product. Once you have got one coded it’s then easy to add others in where you want.

Are you able to expand on that a little please? I keep rereading it, but still don't really understand it...?
