Selling human clothing - anything I need to know

I am thinking of venturing into a little bit of human clothing retail but alarm bells started ringing in my head. Isn't clothing a bit like books and stuff in that there are special rules tax and google wise and stuff like that?

If I did venture into human clothing is there anything I need to know please folks?

Is there a VAT issue with clothes or is that just children's clothing? And did I imagine it or are there special Google Feed requirements for clothing?

I may be out of date, but I believe adult clothes are Vat-able at standard rate and childrens are zero rated
Have heard that gender needs to be inserted into feed as well as size etc

Haven't got time to look for it, but there is an article on google somewhere that says that clothes have the highest return rate. Believe me, it applies to fancy dress too!

Yes, there are google shopping changes you will have to make/add. Kids clothes have zero VAT.

I sell ladies and kids clothing. Adult clothing has VAT on it and childrens clothing is zero rated. My returns rate isn't very high. I don't know exactly but I'd say its about 15%

So taxonomy seems to be Clothing & Accessories : Clothing : Tops

Does that seem OK? I am thinking of selling t-shirts and hoodies.

And looking at https://support.google.com/merchants...88494?hl=en-GB I think I also need to state gender (male, female, unisex), age (adult, kids) and colour.

Colour is presumably already sorted in options but how to I specify gender and age please, for the google feed?

Oh, would assigning male, female, unisex, adult, kids as attributes do it?

If you are just selling one gender and one age group you can add it manually to your feed very easily, but if you are selling multi gender and multi ages then the easiest way is to set up options and then add them to your export product feed for Google shopping.

Hi Ian, thanks for your help. I am thinking all adults (no kids cos I am no the Flat Rate Scheme for VAT so it won't pay me to sell zero rated goods) then there will be an adult mens t-shirt, a separate adult ladies t-shirt and possibly lets say an adult's unisex hoodie. So gender and age won't be options in the way that colour or size will be. So now I am confused. Sorry.
